Every Polaroid is both an image and a small chemical object. Archiving it means protecting both stories.

The simple idea: Let new photos dry in a cool ventilated place, wait roughly 30 days before long-term plastic sleeves, then store them dry, dark and away from UV light.

The first month

Chemical reactions continue after the image appears. Avoid tight plastic sleeves during this period. Keep photos flat, separated and ventilated without stacking heavy objects on them.

Long-term storage

  • Use archival-quality sleeves or albums after the drying period.
  • Store in a dry, dark and stable environment.
  • Avoid attics, cellars, radiators and exterior walls with condensation.
  • Keep food, adhesive tape and PVC plastics away.
  • Use UV-protective glass when displaying originals.

Make a digital catalogue

Scan both the front and any useful writing on the back. Use filenames with date, place and people. Keep at least two backups in separate locations.

Handling

Hold by the border with clean dry hands. Do not bend the image area or press on old chemical pods.

FAQ

Can Polaroids go into an album immediately?

It is safer to let them dry fully; Polaroid recommends avoiding classic plastic sleeves during the first 30 days.

Will sunlight fade them?

UV exposure can change and fade instant photographs over time.

Should I laminate Polaroids?

Permanent lamination can trap materials and makes future conservation difficult; archival sleeves are safer.
