An emulsion lift frees the image from its familiar white frame. The photograph becomes a thin, floating skin that can wrinkle, fold and settle onto a new surface.

In one sentence: A fully developed instant photograph is opened, the image-bearing layer is carefully released in warm water and transferred to paper or another suitable support.
What makes it different
The result is not a copy printed from a scan. It uses material from the original photograph. Every crease and translucent edge comes from hand movement, water and the delicate emulsion itself.
The basic process
- Choose a fully developed, dry photograph.
- Prepare clean water, tools and a suitable receiving surface.
- Open the photograph carefully according to the film type.
- Release and separate the image layer without tearing it.
- Guide the floating emulsion onto the new surface.
- Arrange folds and edges, then let the piece dry flat.
Safety and patience
Instant-film chemistry and cut film edges should be handled carefully. Use gloves, protect the work area and do not treat the process as a children’s craft without experienced supervision.
