Double-X 5222 35mm B&W Film for Cinematic Photography

Double-X 5222 is a legendary black and white cinema film stock, now bulk-loaded for your 35mm camera. Known for its rich contrast, moody tones, and classic grain, this film is perfect for photographers who want images with a strong cinematic feeling.

Originally made for motion picture cameras, Double-X 5222 responds beautifully to different lighting situations. It works well for street photography, documentary work, portraits, low-light moods, and any project where you want atmosphere instead of perfect cleanliness. The look is expressive, timeless, and full of character.

This roll is carefully bulk-loaded by hand in our Berlin-Wedding lab. Because it is made from motion picture film stock and prepared in-house, it carries the spirit of real analog work: practical, human, and slightly imperfect in the best way.

The Lab’s Honest Talk

This film is rated at ISO 250 in daylight, but these specific cassettes are DX-coded at ISO 200. If you shoot with a fully automatic point-and-shoot camera, the camera will read the roll as ISO 200.

This is not a problem. In fact, a little overexposure is often beautiful with Double-X 5222 because it helps bring more detail into the shadows and gives the negative a stronger base for scanning or printing.

If you use a fully manual camera, you can set your meter to ISO 250, ISO 200, or experiment depending on the light and the look you want.

Development & Scanning

You can buy this roll online or pick it up directly at Berlin Photo Studio in Berlin-Wedding. When you finish shooting, bring it back to us for handcrafted black and white film development and scanning.

We develop and scan black and white film in-house, with real care and attention to the character of each roll.

FAQ

What is Double-X 5222?

Double-X 5222 is a classic black and white motion picture film stock known for rich contrast, cinematic tones, and visible grain. It is often used for atmospheric photography and storytelling.

Is Double-X 5222 good for beginners?

Yes, but it is especially nice for people who enjoy contrast, grain, and a more cinematic black and white look. Beginners can shoot it easily, especially if the camera reads DX coding automatically.

Why is this film DX-coded at 200 ISO?

These cassettes are DX-coded at ISO 200. The film itself is commonly rated at ISO 250 in daylight. Shooting it at 200 gives a slight overexposure, which can help preserve shadow detail.

Can I shoot this film in a point-and-shoot camera?

Yes. A point-and-shoot camera with DX reading will usually expose this roll at ISO 200. That works well for Double-X 5222 and can give strong, usable negatives.

What process does Double-X 5222 need?

Double-X 5222 uses standard black and white film development chemistry.

Can Berlin Photo Studio develop and scan this film?

Yes. Berlin Photo Studio can develop and scan this film directly in-house in Berlin-Wedding.

What is Double-X 5222 best for?

It is great for street photography, portraits, documentary work, moody light, cinematic scenes, and black and white projects with strong atmosphere.
