Negative Film vs Slide Film

ECN-2 cinema film processing equipment at Berlin Photo Studio

Negative film is generally more forgiving and flexible. Slide film offers direct positive images, strong colour and a narrower exposure window.

C-41 and ECN-2 are negative processes; E-6 is the common colour-reversal process.

How to recognise it

Colour negatives usually have an orange mask. Correctly processed slide film displays the scene as a positive image.

Why it matters

Exposure and process cannot be interchanged casually. Slide film demands more precise metering.

Before sending the film

  • Exposure latitude
  • Desired contrast
  • Projection or direct viewing
  • Scanning workflow

Frequently asked questions

Can the process be changed after development?

No. Development is irreversible, so identify the film and communicate special requests first.

Does scanning replace correct development?

No. Scanning interprets the developed image but cannot restore layers damaged or omitted during processing.

Where can I order the correct service?

Use our Film Development Guide to identify C-41, ECN-2, black-and-white, E-6 and Scala services.
