Chemical shelf life is not one number. Unopened concentrate, opened concentrate, stock solution and working solution can each age at a different speed.

Manufacturer guidance is the only reliable starting point because formulas and packaging differ. Record the opening and mixing dates immediately.
Oxygen is a major enemy
Many developers oxidise faster in partly full bottles. Heat, repeated opening and contaminated tools accelerate the change.
- Use clean, well-sealed containers.
- Reduce unnecessary air space when the product allows.
- Store away from heat, sunlight, food and children.
Working solutions age faster
Diluted chemistry is often less stable than concentrate. Some developers are intended for immediate one-shot use; others have documented storage lives.
Fixer and stop bath also have limits
Fixer can be exhausted by silver even before storage age is reached. Stop bath may have an indicator, but capacity and contamination still matter.
Do not trust appearance alone
A solution can look clear and still be weak. Important film deserves fresh or properly tested chemistry.
Four different clocks are running
A chemical does not have one universal expiry date. Think of four clocks: the unopened concentrate, the opened concentrate, a stored working solution and the solution while it is actively processing film. Each clock runs at a different speed. A bottle may remain within its printed date while an old, half-full working solution has already become unreliable.
Concentrates usually last longest because less water and less air are involved. Once diluted, the solution is more exposed to oxygen, contamination and temperature changes. High-dilution developers used one-shot should be mixed immediately before processing and discarded through the correct waste route after use. Replenished or reusable systems need capacity records; memory is not a measuring instrument.
How storage changes shelf life
- Air: squeeze bottles, smaller full bottles or inert-gas systems reduce the oxygen above the liquid.
- Heat: repeated warm storage speeds reactions. Keep chemistry at the temperature recommended by its maker.
- Light: use opaque or amber containers when specified.
- Contamination: a few drops of fixer in developer can ruin it. Use separate graduates, funnels and stirring tools.
- Water quality: very hard or contaminated water can create deposits and instability in working solutions.
Write the opening date and mixing date directly on the bottle. Add dilution, number of rolls processed and the manufacturer’s stated capacity. This tiny habit turns chemistry from a guessing game into a repeatable workflow.
Testing developer and fixer
A clip test can confirm that a developer still has activity, but it does not guarantee normal contrast, speed or evenness. For important film, use fresh chemistry or test with a sacrificial exposed strip under the same time and temperature you plan to use.
Fixer can be checked with a clearing-time test using an undeveloped film leader. Time how long the milky appearance takes to disappear in fresh fixer, then repeat as the solution ages. A common working rule is to retire the fixer when clearing time reaches roughly twice its fresh value, while always respecting the product’s published capacity. The exact procedure depends on the fixer and film.
Signs that chemistry should not be trusted
Unexpected crystals, separation, heavy sediment, a damaged bottle, an unknown storage history or a missing label are enough reasons to pause. Colour change can be meaningful for some developers but is not a universal test. Smell is never a safe diagnostic method: do not deliberately inhale chemistry.

- Writing only the product name on a working bottle.
- Storing chemistry in drink bottles.
- Mixing fresh solution into an unknown old batch.
- Using a general internet shelf-life estimate instead of the exact instructions.
A small chemistry log that prevents failed rolls
Create one line for every bottle: product, batch, date opened, date mixed, dilution, storage container, rolls processed and planned discard point. Add clearing-test results for fixer. When a developer is used one-shot, mark it clearly so nobody returns it to storage.
For a roll you cannot replace, avoid chemistry with an unknown history even if a quick test appears positive. A test proves some activity, not full tonal performance. Fresh solution, accurate temperature and documented agitation are cheaper than trying to recover thin or uneven negatives later.
Do not extend life by contaminating concentrate
Pour only the amount you need into a clean graduate and never return unused measured liquid to the original bottle. Use a clean cap and wipe the thread before closing. Smaller, completely filled storage bottles can help after opening, but transfer them only into compatible, clearly labelled containers. The product label and safety information must remain traceable.

Does refrigerating chemistry make it last longer?
Only if the manufacturer recommends it. Some concentrates can crystallise or change at low temperature.
Can oxidised developer be rescued?
Usually it should be replaced. Adding fresh concentrate does not restore a controlled formula.
