Scanning a Polaroid is like photographing a small glossy object. The challenge is not only resolution—it is keeping the surface flat, clean and free from reflections.

The simple idea: Let the photograph dry fully, clean it gently, avoid pressing glossy surfaces directly against glass when Newton rings appear, and save a high-quality archival master.
Before scanning
- Wait until the photograph is fully dry; for archival handling, Polaroid advises patience during the first month.
- Use a clean air blower or very soft brush.
- Do not apply liquid cleaner to the image surface.
- Decide whether to include the full border.
Scanner or camera copy?
A flatbed scanner is convenient but can create Newton rings where glossy layers touch glass. A camera-copy setup avoids direct contact and can capture texture, but requires even light, careful alignment and reflection control.
Resolution and files
Scan enough pixels for the intended print, not merely social media. Keep a high-quality TIFF or maximum-quality master and make smaller JPEG copies for sharing. Do not repeatedly edit and resave the only file.
Colour correction
Create a neutral archival version before making a stylised edit. The original border, slight colour shifts and texture are part of the object’s identity.
FAQ
Should I scan immediately?
For best physical stability, allow the photograph to dry fully before pressure or sleeves.
What are Newton rings?
Concentric patterns caused by contact between glossy surfaces and scanner glass.
