A film-development recipe can look like a list of mysterious liquids. In reality, each one has a simple job: reveal the image, stop the reaction, make the image permanent and help the negative dry cleanly.

Developer reveals the latent image
Exposure creates an invisible latent image in the film emulsion. Developer converts the exposed silver halide crystals into metallic silver, making the negative visible. Time, dilution, temperature and agitation all change how strongly it works.
- More development can increase density and contrast.
- Too little development can produce thin, weak negatives.
- Use the film and developer manufacturer’s data sheet as your starting point.
Stop bath ends development
An acidic stop bath rapidly neutralises the alkaline developer. A water rinse can slow the reaction, but a proper stop bath is more immediate and reduces developer carry-over into the fixer.
- Stop bath improves repeatability.
- Indicator stop baths change colour as they become exhausted.
- Do not pour stop bath into developer by accident.
Fixer makes the image permanent
Fixer removes the unexposed silver halides that would otherwise darken when the film sees light. Once fixing is complete, the tank can normally be opened and the film can be washed in normal light.
- Under-fixed film can look milky or cloudy.
- Fixer has a finite capacity and should be tested or tracked.
- Used fixer contains silver and needs responsible handling.
Wetting agent improves drying
A correctly diluted wetting agent reduces surface tension so water leaves the film more evenly. It helps prevent drying marks, but too much can create foam or residue.
The order matters
The standard sequence is developer, stop, fixer, wash, wetting-agent rinse and drying. Keep tools clean and avoid contaminating developer with even small amounts of fixer.
What happens to the silver image at each stage
Exposure creates a latent pattern in the silver-halide crystals, but nothing visible appears yet. Developer reduces the exposed crystals into metallic silver. Stop bath or a controlled water rinse interrupts that activity. Fixer dissolves the remaining undeveloped silver halide, allowing the film to be viewed in light. Washing removes residual processing compounds, and wetting agent helps water leave the surface evenly during drying.
Developer: the most creative chemical
Developer affects effective film speed, grain appearance, edge sharpness, contrast and tonal separation. Dilution, time, temperature and agitation are part of the developer choice. More development generally increases negative density and contrast most strongly in highlights; it cannot recreate shadow information that was never exposed.
Three useful starting points are ADOX Rodinal, ADOX HC-110 Pro and ILFORD ILFOTEC DD-X. They are not interchangeable by volume or time. Use the current instructions for the exact film, dilution and temperature.
Stop bath: control and protection
An acid stop bath ends alkaline development quickly and reduces developer carry-over into fixer. Some workflows allow a water rinse instead. The correct choice depends on the film, developer and published process. Indicator stop bath changes colour when exhausted, but contamination and capacity still require attention.
Fixer: making the negative light-safe
Fixer is not optional. Without complete fixing, the film remains cloudy and continues to react to light. Fix for the specified time with agitation, then wash thoroughly. Track capacity and clearing time. Used fixer contains dissolved silver and must be collected and disposed of through the appropriate route.
Washing and wetting agent
Washing is a chemical-removal stage, not cosmetic rinsing. Use a wash method suitable for the fixer and film. In the final rinse, a correctly diluted product such as ADOX ADOFLO II lowers surface tension so water drains more evenly. Too much can create foam and residue.
Contamination control
Reserve separate graduates, funnels and stirring rods for developer and fixer. A tiny amount of fixer can ruin developer. Work from clean to contaminated, close concentrate bottles immediately and label every working solution with product, dilution and date. Never identify chemistry by smelling it.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Guessing dilution instead of measuring it.
- Using one measuring cylinder without rinsing between chemicals.
- Changing time, temperature and agitation at the same time.
- Treating all developers and films as if they shared one universal recipe.
A beginner mixing example
If a tank requires 300 ml and the published dilution is 1+9, the final solution contains one part concentrate and nine parts water: 30 ml concentrate plus 270 ml water. For 1+25, divide the final volume by 26, not 25. Always calculate from the final working volume and use measuring tools suited to the small quantity.
Do not copy this example as a development instruction; dilution notation and minimum concentrate requirements vary by product. Confirm the exact data sheet before mixing.
FAQ
Can I develop black-and-white film with only developer and fixer?
Yes, a water rinse can replace stop bath in some workflows, but a dedicated stop bath gives a faster and more repeatable stop and can help preserve fixer life.
Is wetting agent essential?
No, but it is useful when water quality or drying conditions cause marks. Use only the small dilution recommended by the manufacturer.
Can colour-film chemicals be used for black-and-white film?
Standard black-and-white films require a black-and-white process. Chromogenic black-and-white films designed for C-41 are an exception.
Which chemical is most sensitive to contamination?
Developer is especially vulnerable. Small amounts of fixer can ruin or weaken it, so keep containers and measuring tools clearly separated.
