The Silence Photobook by Mengfan Yang
Product Details
The Silence photobook by Mengfan Yang is a quiet and contemplative photographic work created over several years between China and Europe. The Silence photobook by Mengfan Yang gathers images that explore spaces where time feels paused—places that exist between presence and absence.
In these photographs, people never appear directly. Instead, traces of life remain through objects, architecture, and fragments of everyday environments. Through this approach, The Silence photobook by Mengfan Yang becomes a visual meditation on stillness, memory, and observation.
Each photograph invites the viewer to slow down and notice the subtle details that often go unnoticed in daily life.
The Silence Photobook by Mengfan Yang – A Meditation on Stillness
The The Silence photobook by Mengfan Yang reflects a slow photographic practice rooted in patience and observation. Rather than documenting events or people, the project focuses on environments where quiet tension exists between presence and emptiness.
Mengfan Yang’s journey into photography began more than ten years ago with a used Polaroid Land Camera. At that time, peel-apart film cost around seven yuan per shot, which felt expensive. Yet the process itself became the fascination: manual settings, waiting for development, and the uncertainty of whether the image would appear.
Over the years, this curiosity evolved into a deeper exploration of analog photography. The photographer moved from Polaroid to 35mm film and eventually to medium format cameras. Darkroom work followed, allowing for a deeper understanding of light, structure, and composition.
The Silence photobook by Mengfan Yang brings together photographs made across China in quiet spaces where everyday scenes appear suspended in time.
About the Photographer
Before becoming a full-time photographer, Mengfan Yang worked for several years as a product manager at TikTok. That environment was defined by speed, measurable outcomes, and constant digital interaction.
Film photography offered the opposite experience: uncertainty, patience, and presence.
Eventually Mengfan left that career path, moved to Berlin, and began focusing entirely on analog photography while collaborating with a film studio and creative community.
Through this shift, the photographer embraced a slower relationship with images and the spaces they inhabit.
