A dark Polaroid usually means the camera saw more light than the subject actually received, or the flash could not reach what you wanted to photograph.

Quick diagnosis: Move the subject closer, use flash indoors, avoid bright backgrounds behind a shaded face and let cold film reach room temperature.
The most common causes
- The room was too large or the subject too far from flash.
- A bright window, sky or lamp behind the subject influenced exposure.
- SX-70 film was used in weak light without a suitable flash.
- Cold film developed slowly with muted colours and low contrast.
- A finger covered the flash, lens or exposure sensor.
- The camera’s exposure system or shutter needs service.
How to test the camera
Use fresh film at room temperature. Photograph one person outdoors in bright open shade or soft daylight at a normal portrait distance. Keep the sun behind you or to the side, not behind the subject.
If that frame looks normal, the earlier scene was probably outside the camera’s useful light range. If every controlled frame is dark, inspect the sensor and camera.
Can scanning rescue it?
A scan may reveal some hidden shadow information, but it cannot rebuild detail that the film never recorded. The original remains the best diagnostic evidence.
FAQ
Should I always use flash indoors?
For most simple Polaroid cameras, yes, unless the room is genuinely bright or you are intentionally making a long-exposure effect.
Why is the face dark but the window perfect?
The camera exposed for the brighter background.
Does cold film make pictures darker?
Cold can slow development and reduce colour and contrast, making the result appear weak or dark.
Keep the evidence
Do not throw away a failed photograph immediately. Bring the camera, the remaining film pack and examples to Berlin Photo Studio in Wedding. A pattern across several frames often reveals whether the cause is light, distance, temperature, rollers, chemistry or the camera.
