Flash is not a magic sun. It is a short burst with a limited reach, strongest close to the camera and quickly weaker with distance.
The simple idea: Keep the main subject within the camera’s flash range, avoid reflective surfaces and remember that a nearby face can be bright while the distant room remains black.
When flash helps
- Indoor portraits and parties.
- Faces in outdoor shade.
- Backlit people against a bright sky.
- Scenes where camera shake would otherwise blur the image.
Distance controls everything
Light weakens rapidly as it travels. A person two metres away receives far more flash than a wall across a large hall. Move closer instead of expecting the flash to fill the whole building.
Avoid glare
- Do not photograph directly into mirrors or glass.
- Angle glossy surfaces away from the camera.
- For close portraits, respect the model’s minimum distance.
- Keep fingers away from the flash and exposure sensor.
Vintage flash systems
Some SX-70 models need an electronic flash unit or flashbar. Check exact compatibility before attaching accessories; voltage and connection differ across systems.
