Development and scanning

The format does not determine chemistry. Check whether the film is C-41, ECN-2, B&W, E-6 or another process.

How a 35mm cassette works

Still-photography 35mm film is sold as type 135. The film is 35mm wide, including the perforated edges, while a standard full-frame camera exposes an image approximately 24 × 36mm. The cassette protects the unexposed roll; the camera pulls film across the gate and winds it onto a take-up spool one frame at a time.

Most rolls contain 24 or 36 standard exposures. Careful loading may produce an extra frame, while opening the camera before rewinding can fog several frames. Half-frame cameras use roughly half the usual frame width and can produce about twice as many photographs from the same roll.

DX coding and manual ISO settings

The black-and-silver pattern on many cassettes is a DX code. Compatible cameras read it to set film speed and sometimes exposure count. Older or fully manual cameras ignore the code, so you must set ISO yourself. If the cassette has no DX code, some automatic cameras choose a default value; check the camera manual rather than assuming.

Full-frame, half-frame and panoramic cameras

The film remains 35mm, but the camera determines the exposed frame. Full-frame cameras use the familiar 24 × 36mm area. Half-frame cameras place two vertical images in approximately the same width. Panoramic cameras expose a wider frame and therefore produce fewer photographs per roll. Labs need the actual frame edges to align scans and avoid cutting through unusual formats.

What the process label means

“35mm” identifies the format, not the development chemistry. Colour-negative film normally uses C-41, cinema film may require ECN-2, traditional black-and-white film uses a dedicated developer, and slide film normally uses E-6. Always give the lab the original cassette or a clear photograph of its label.

Common first-roll problems

  • The leader was not attached securely, so the film never advanced.
  • The camera back was opened before rewinding.
  • ISO was set differently from the film speed without development instructions.
  • The rewind release was not pressed, causing resistance or torn film.
  • A battery-dependent shutter did not fire correctly.

Watch the rewind crank or film-transport indicator when advancing. Movement is a useful sign that film is travelling through the camera, although it is not a complete camera test.
