Light seals are quiet parts of a film camera. They sit around the film door, hinge and other openings, blocking stray light before it reaches the film. When the foam ages, it can shrink, crumble or turn into a sticky black residue.
Replacing deteriorated seals can stop leaks caused by the camera back, but not every bright streak comes from foam. A good diagnosis begins with the negatives, the shape of the leak and a physical inspection of the camera.
Where light seals are found
Many 35mm cameras use foam in the channels around the rear door and a thicker strip near the hinge. SLRs may also have a mirror-damper foam above the mirror. Medium-format backs, interchangeable magazines and some compact cameras can use more complex arrangements.
Not every camera uses foam. Some designs depend on interlocking channels, yarn or specialised moulded material. Replacement must match the original function rather than simply filling every visible gap.
Seven signs the seals may need replacement
1. The foam feels sticky
Healthy foam should not behave like tar. Sticky residue can transfer to the door, fingers, film or internal parts.
2. The foam crumbles when touched
If it turns into black dust with very light contact, it no longer forms a dependable barrier.
3. Sections are visibly missing or flattened
Gaps near the hinge or door channel can allow light to enter, especially when the camera is carried in bright sun.
4. Orange or red marks appear near the film edge
Light entering through the camera back often reaches the film through its base and can create red or orange contamination on colour-negative film.
5. Leaks repeat in a similar position
A recurring band or flare near the same edge suggests a camera-based path rather than a random processing mark.
6. The hinge area is dirty with black residue
The hinge seal often receives compression and friction every time the door opens. It can deteriorate before other areas.
7. The mirror damper has collapsed
The mirror bumper is not normally the seal that protects the film door, but deteriorated foam can contaminate the mirror box and change how the mirror stops.
What light leaks can look like
Leaks vary with the size of the opening, film type, camera orientation and time spent in bright light. A camera may produce clean frames indoors and obvious leaks after sitting in direct sun. The negative is more useful than the scan because it reveals whether the mark extends beyond the photographed frame.

Why replacement requires careful preparation
The difficult part is not cutting a black strip. Old adhesive and foam must be removed without scratching channels or dropping debris into the film transport, shutter or mirror box. New material must have an appropriate thickness so the door closes normally without excessive pressure.
On some models, incorrect material can interfere with the film counter, door latch or mirror movement. Complex cameras and medium-format backs may need a model-specific quote.
Will new seals guarantee the leak is gone?
No honest service can promise that before inspection. Leaks can also originate from a damaged door, warped back, shutter problem, missing screw, viewfinder opening or film cassette. Seal replacement solves leaks caused by deteriorated sealing material.
