Photography is more than a transaction
A roll can become a conversation, a lesson, a print, a workshop or the beginning of somebody’s practice.
Berlin Photo Studio · Our Story
Every studio has a first frame. This is ours: the small 2024 space where Berlin Photo Studio began to take shape.
Archive photograph · 2024
These photographs document the original Berlin Photo Studio in 2024. The shop, laboratory, services and community have continued to grow since they were made.
The public doors open
Berlin Photo Studio began with a simple belief: photography should remain human. The first shop was modest—part laboratory, part camera shelf, part reading room and part invitation to meet.
The shelves were not full. The identity was still being made by hand. Services, open calls and questions appeared directly on the window. What the room lacked in polish, it carried in intention.
This chapter is important because it shows the difference between opening a shop and building a place. One can happen in a day. The other takes people, experiments, mistakes and time.
The first shared memory
On 8 June 2024, the archive stops being only photographs of a room, shelves and handmade signs. People arrive. They look, talk, carry cameras and turn the first exhibition into Berlin Photo Studio’s first shared memory.
These photographs document the opening celebration itself: visitors moving through the portrait installation, conversations beginning inside the small space, and the original event poster facing Nazarethkirchstraße.
Inside the first room
The first interior mixed cameras for sale with independent photobooks, zines, personal prints and portraits of the people passing through. The display was not only decoration—it showed what kind of photographic culture the space wanted to support.
What was already there
The room has changed, but three ideas visible in these photographs still shape Berlin Photo Studio today.
A roll can become a conversation, a lesson, a print, a workshop or the beginning of somebody’s practice.
Development and scanning are technical, but they should never feel like a sealed black box to the photographer.
Open calls, books, meetings and experiments gave people reasons to stay beyond a purchase.
A question on the wall
This question belonged in the first space because Berlin Photo Studio was never meant to provide only one answer.
A photograph can be evidence, memory, craft, accident, business, art or a way to meet another person. The studio grew by keeping the question open.
From 2024 to today
The original shop became a broader independent analogue photography space in Berlin-Wedding. The evolution continues, but its direction is already visible.
