ADOX Rodinal is a highly concentrated black-and-white film developer known for clear edge definition, visible grain and an extremely economical one-shot workflow. It is simple to mix, but the dilution and the quantity of concentrate matter.
This guide explains the practical logic. The exact development time must always come from the current data for your film, exposure index, dilution, temperature and agitation method.
What Rodinal does
Developer converts the exposed silver-halide crystals in the film into metallic silver. Rodinal is often chosen when photographers want strong apparent sharpness and clearly described grain rather than the smoothest possible negative.
It can work with many traditional black-and-white films, but it does not make every film look the same. Film type, exposure, dilution, temperature and agitation remain part of the result.
Choose the dilution
ADOX lists Rodinal for dilutions from 1+25 to much higher dilutions. The most practical starting points are normally 1+25 or 1+50 when a reliable time is available for the chosen film.
| Working solution | Rodinal concentrate | Water |
|---|---|---|
| 500 ml at 1+25 | 19.2 ml | 480.8 ml |
| 500 ml at 1+50 | 9.8 ml | 490.2 ml |
| 1 litre at 1+50 | 19.6 ml | 980.4 ml |
The notation 1+50 means one part concentrate plus fifty parts water: fifty-one parts in total. It does not mean one part inside a total of fifty.
Respect the minimum concentrate quantity
ADOX states that each 35mm or 120 roll needs at least 5 ml of Rodinal concentrate. A small tank can therefore limit how far you can dilute.
For example, 300 ml at 1+100 contains only about 3 ml of concentrate. Even if a development time exists, that volume would fall below the manufacturer’s minimum for one roll. Increase the total working volume or choose a stronger dilution.
Mix the working solution
- Check the tank volume and calculate the concentrate required.
- Measure water close to the processing temperature.
- Measure Rodinal accurately with a dedicated syringe or graduate.
- Add the concentrate to the water and mix gently.
- Prepare only what you need immediately before development.
Rodinal is a one-shot developer. After processing, do not pour the used working solution back into the concentrate bottle and do not plan to reuse it for another roll.
Develop the film
- Load the film onto the reel in complete darkness and close the tank.
- Bring the working solution and tank to the temperature required by the chosen development table.
- Pour the developer in smoothly and start timing consistently.
- Agitate according to the same method used by the published time.
- At the end, pour out the developer and continue with stop bath or a water stop, fixer, washing and the final wetting-agent bath.
Do not borrow a time from a different film simply because the ISO is the same. Two ISO 400 films can need different times.
Common Rodinal mistakes
- Confusing 1+50 with a total of fifty parts.
- Using less than 5 ml concentrate for one roll.
- Changing dilution without changing development time.
- Using an online time without checking temperature and agitation.
- Trying to reuse the one-shot working solution.
- Judging grain only from an aggressively sharpened scan.
When Rodinal is a good choice
Choose Rodinal when you value economy, long concentrate life, simple one-shot mixing and strong edge definition. Choose a different developer when the main goal is the smoothest possible grain or maximum speed from a demanding high-speed film.

FAQ
Can Rodinal be reused?
No. ADOX specifies Rodinal as a one-shot developer.
How much concentrate is needed per roll?
Use at least 5 ml of concentrate for each 35mm or 120 roll, even at high dilution.
Is 1+25 better than 1+50?
No dilution is automatically better. They require different times and can change grain, contrast and practical tank volume.
Can I use one universal development time?
No. Match the time to the film, exposure index, dilution, temperature and agitation method.
