WHAT CHANGES THE PRICE?

Film development is not one single product. The process, film format, scan file and handling choices build the final order. This page explains the logic; the live product selector shows the current price.

The quick answer

Start with the result you need.

Develop only gives you processed film without new digital files. Develop + JPEG adds practical, ready-to-use scans. Develop + TIFF adds larger lossless files for a more demanding editing or archive workflow.

After that, choose the correct format and any development adjustment. Collection, return shipping and special handling sit around the lab service—not inside the chemistry itself.

01 / PROCESS

C-41, ECN-2, B&W, E-6 or Scala

Different films need different chemical processes. The label on the film or box usually identifies it.

02 / FORMAT

Standard, half-frame or another format

The physical film and number of frames affect scanning and handling.

03 / OUTPUT

No scan, JPEG or TIFF

Development prepares the film; scanning creates the digital files.

04 / EXTRAS

Adjustment, cutting and return

Only add services you need, then review the live total before payment.

The largest everyday decision

Develop only, JPEG or TIFF?

LOWEST SERVICE LEVEL

Develop only

Your exposed film is chemically processed and returned as negatives or positive transparencies, depending on the process. No new scan files are included.

  • Choose it if you scan yourself
  • Choose it if you need the physical film only
  • You can request scanning later if the film is still available
Development cost, without scan output
MOST PRACTICAL

Develop + JPEG

Development plus compressed digital files that are easy to download, share, select and print for most everyday uses.

  • Smaller files than TIFF
  • Convenient for phones, websites and social use
  • Suitable for many standard photo prints
Adds scanning to the development price
MORE FILE DATA

Develop + TIFF

Development plus lossless scan files intended for customers who want a larger working file, heavier editing or a more preservation-oriented master.

  • Larger downloads and storage needs
  • Useful for extended editing workflows
  • Keep a JPEG copy for easy access and sharing
Higher scan option than JPEG

The file type does not change what the camera recorded. It changes the delivered scan file and how you can work with it. For resolution, archival scans and rescanning, use the Film Scanning Guide.

Standard versus half-frame

One roll can contain very different amounts of work.

135
½½
135 standard

A conventional 35mm frame. Select this for a normal full-frame 35mm camera.

135 half-frame

Each normal 35mm frame area is divided into two photographs. A roll can therefore produce roughly twice as many images to identify, scan and deliver. Development may remain the same while the scan option increases.

Other formats

120, 110, panoramic 35mm and 4×5 appear only where the specific process supports them. Use the format listed on the product rather than choosing the nearest-looking option.

Not sure?

Compare the cassette, backing paper or sheet dimensions in the Film Formats Guide, or ask Berlin Photo Studio before ordering.

What else can affect the total?

Separate the laboratory work from the logistics.

01 / DEVELOPMENT ADJUSTMENT

Push or pull

A push or pull request changes development from the standard time. Where the live product offers this option, selecting it adds the current adjustment charge. Tell us the exact instruction—such as +1 or −1—not only the ISO number.

Request it before processing

Understand push and pull →

02 / NEGATIVE HANDLING

Cutting

Cut film is easier to sleeve and collect; uncut film can suit customers who archive or scan full strips themselves. Cutting is not the same as scanning. State your preference when ordering and use the current product or shop instructions for any available handling charge.

Confirm before the roll is cut
03 / AFTER DEVELOPMENT

Collection or return

Choose local collection if you will pick up the negatives in Berlin. If the physical film must be sent back, return delivery is a separate logistics cost. Digital scan delivery does not automatically mean physical negative shipping.

Negatives require a return plan

04 / SENDING FILM TO BERLIN

Mail-in costs

You pay to send the undeveloped film to Berlin Photo Studio. Any return shipment for the processed negatives is separate and depends on the delivery choice shown during the order. Use the mail-in instructions and checkout for the current cost.

Choose the chemistry first

Five processes, five live product selectors.

If the process is the part you cannot identify, use the Film Development Guide. Choosing the wrong chemistry is not a harmless price choice—it can produce the wrong processing route.

How the physical roll travels

Bring it in or send it in.

BERLIN / LOCAL

Shop drop-off

Bring the film to Berlin Photo Studio, confirm the process and options, and decide how you will collect the negatives. Local collection avoids a return-shipping charge.

MAIL-IN / DISTANCE

Post to the lab

Place the order, protect and label the rolls, include the information that connects the parcel to your order, and use tracked shipping where appropriate. Outbound postage and negative return are separate parts of the journey.

Price and option FAQ

What am I actually paying for?

Why does this page not show a complete fixed price list?

Because product options and delivery costs can change. The live product variant and checkout are the current source of truth; this guide explains why one selection differs from another.

Does develop only include scans?

No. Develop only means chemical processing without new JPEG or TIFF scan files.

Why does half-frame scanning cost more than standard 35mm?

Half-frame cameras place two smaller photographs in the area normally used by one standard 35mm frame. That creates many more individual images to handle and scan, even though the roll uses the same film width.

Is TIFF automatically a better-looking photograph?

No. TIFF is a larger lossless working file. It does not correct exposure, focus, camera faults or missing detail. Choose it when the workflow benefits from the file format.

Can pushing rescue an incorrectly exposed roll?

Not reliably. A development adjustment affects the whole roll and cannot recreate information the film never recorded. Read the Push & Pull Guide and provide the instruction before processing.

Are my negatives automatically mailed back?

No. Scan delivery and physical negative delivery are separate. Choose collection or arrange the relevant return option, and observe the studio's negative-storage policy.

Does mail-in development include the cost of posting film to Berlin?

No. You arrange and pay for the parcel to reach the lab. Any return shipment is also a separate delivery choice.

Can I order scanning later?

Yes, if the processed negatives are still available and suitable for scanning. Do not use this as long-term storage: collect or arrange return of your negatives within the stated storage period.
