Use daylight-balanced film outdoors and with daylight-type flash. Use tungsten-balanced film under warm tungsten light or when you deliberately want cool daylight colour.
Film colour balance is fixed at manufacture. Scanning can adjust it, but mixed lighting and strong casts may remain.
Choose according to the light
Modern LEDs vary widely, so their label does not always predict how film will render them.
Choose according to the result
Daylight film under tungsten light looks warm; tungsten film in daylight looks blue unless corrected.
Practical considerations
- Dominant light source
- Day versus night
- Flash use
- Mixed lighting
- Correction filters
- Film process
Our recommendation
Choose for the dominant light and treat colour shifts as an intentional decision rather than a surprise.
Frequently asked questions
Is this suitable for a beginner?
Yes. Daylight film is the simplest general option for outdoor and flash photography.
Can exposure mistakes be fixed in development?
Only partly and only when the laboratory receives clear instructions before processing. Development cannot replace missing light.
Does scanning change the appearance?
Yes. Colour, contrast and brightness are interpreted during scanning, but the negative’s exposure remains the foundation.
