“My camera needs a service” can mean five very different things. It may need dust removed from the film chamber, deteriorated seals replaced, shutter speeds calibrated or a broken electronic component diagnosed. These jobs do not require the same time, tools or price.
Understanding the difference between cleaning, inspection, light-seal replacement, CLA and repair prevents the wrong expectation before work begins.
Camera cleaning
Cleaning removes dust, grime, loose debris and accessible residue. A basic service can cover the body, film chamber, pressure plate and an operational check. Advanced cleaning goes deeper into safely accessible areas and allows more time for stubborn contamination.
Cleaning is appropriate when the camera works but feels neglected. It cannot correct shutter timing, focus calibration or an electrical fault.
Camera check or inspection
An inspection looks for obvious operational problems: film transport, battery compartment condition, shutter response, controls, door closure and visible contamination. It is not the same as measuring every shutter speed or calibrating a meter with specialist equipment.
A check is valuable before exposing an important roll because it can identify whether cleaning is sensible or whether the camera should go directly to a repair specialist.
Light-seal replacement
This removes deteriorated foam around the film door and replaces it with suitable new material. Mirror-damper foam may also be replaced when accessible and appropriate.
It addresses degraded sealing material, not every possible source of light leaks. A damaged shutter or camera back is a repair issue.
What does CLA mean?
CLA means clean, lubricate and adjust. A true CLA usually involves model-specific disassembly, removal of old lubricant, correct new lubrication, adjustment and measurement. Depending on the camera, it may cover shutter speeds, film transport, rangefinder alignment or other mechanisms.
CLA is specialist mechanical work. It should not be used as a decorative word for external cleaning.
What counts as repair?
Repair corrects a defect: replacing a broken part, fixing a jammed shutter, repairing electronics, treating impact damage or resolving a transport fault. Diagnosis may be required before a price can be given because the same symptom can have several causes.

Choose by symptom, not by hope
A deeper cleaning package is not a cheaper repair. If the camera is jammed, corroded or electronically dead, contact the studio before ordering. If it works and needs a careful reset, choose the cleaning level that matches its condition.
FAQ
Does Advanced Cleaning include a CLA?
No. It does not include lubrication, calibration or model-specific mechanical adjustment.
Can cleaning make a non-working camera work?
Cleaning may remove contamination, but a non-working camera requires diagnosis before any repair can be promised.
Is light-seal replacement a complete light-leak repair?
It corrects deteriorated foam. Other leak paths may need repair.
Will I be contacted if I order the wrong level?
Yes. Berlin Photo Studio inspects the camera before beginning and contacts you if the selected package is unsuitable.
Can I drop off without shipping?
