Black and White Film Workshop in Berlin

The Black and White Film Workshop is where you stop guessing and start understanding how film development really works.

This is a private 1&1 workshop at Berlin Photo Studio for people who want to learn how to develop and scan black and white film by doing it with their own hands. You do not just watch someone else work. You load the film, prepare the chemistry, develop the negatives, dry them, scan them, and see the final images come alive.

By the end of the workshop, black and white film development becomes less mysterious. Like cooking, it feels complicated until someone shows you the steps and you try it once yourself.

This workshop is practical, slow, and human. No unnecessary theory. No cold classroom feeling. Just you, the film, the chemistry, the scanner, and a clear process you can repeat again at home or in a darkroom.

What You Learn

During this black and white film workshop in Berlin, we go step by step through the full process:

  • How black and white film works
  • How to load film into a development tank
  • How to use developer, stop bath, and fixer
  • Timing and temperature basics
  • Washing and drying negatives
  • Preparing negatives for scanning
  • Scanning your film
  • Converting negatives into final digital images
  • Basic tips for avoiding common development mistakes

What You Bring

Please bring:

  • Up to 2 exposed black and white film rolls
  • Optional: your laptop for editing or saving files
  • Optional: a notebook if you want to write down the process

We provide the development tank, chemistry, scanner access, basic materials, and guidance during the workshop.

What You Get

After the workshop, you leave with:

  • Your developed black and white negatives
  • Your digital scans
  • A clear understanding of the development workflow
  • Practical experience with scanning
  • More confidence to develop film on your own
  • A better understanding of what happens after you finish a roll

You do not just learn it.

You do it.

Who This Workshop Is For

This workshop is for beginners, film photography lovers, students, artists, analog photographers, and curious people who want to understand the full black and white film workflow.

You do not need previous darkroom experience. It helps if you already know how to shoot a film roll, but the development process will be explained from the beginning.

Important Notes

This is a hands-on workshop using your own exposed black and white film rolls. Results can depend on exposure, film condition, camera condition, and how the film was handled before development.

If your roll was not exposed correctly, was damaged, or has camera-related issues, the workshop will still help you understand the process, but the final images may vary.

Please bring only standard black and white film. C41 black and white films such as Ilford XP2 are not developed with standard black and white chemistry.
