What Is 120 Medium-Format Film?

120 film is wrapped with backing paper rather than contained in a 35mm cassette.

Different cameras expose 6×4.5, 6×6, 6×7, 6×9 and other frame sizes on the same roll.

What to know

  • Larger negative area
  • Variable frame count
  • Backing-paper loading
  • No sprocket holes
  • Camera-specific frame masks

Development and scanning

The film stock still determines C-41, B&W, E-6 or other processing. Scanning must match the actual frame size.
