Menu Photography vs Social Media Content

Plated food and a cocktail photographed on a restaurant table

Menu images help customers choose a dish. Social photographs can also tell the story of the room, the preparation and the people. Plan both uses before cooking begins.

Why a menu image must be clear first

A menu photograph should make the dish easy to identify and give an honest idea of portion and ingredients. Keep plates, camera angle and colour treatment consistent so customers can compare options. Decorative elements should not conceal the food or suggest extras are included. At a small size, a clear silhouette often matters more than elaborate styling.

How social photographs can carry atmosphere

Social content can explain what happens around the plate: preparation, hands, ingredients, the room and the people serving it. Sequence these images to tell a short story rather than repeatedly posting the same hero dish. Leave space for captions when needed, and make atmosphere support the restaurant's identity without changing the food into something guests will not recognise.

Which crops should be planned during one session

List the required destinations before shooting: menu, website banner, square feed and vertical story may need different framing. Photograph the hero dish with enough surrounding space, then make deliberate vertical and horizontal versions while the set is ready. Do not assume a tight landscape crop can later become a full-height portrait image without losing the subject.

Practical checklist

  • Choose the dishes and drinks that represent the business
  • Plan the order around freshness and preparation time
  • Clean glassware, plates and visible work surfaces
  • Reserve a quiet window away from peak service
