Film development cannot be repeated because the emulsion changes permanently during the first process.
Developer forms the image, while later stages stabilise it and remove material that would otherwise remain light-sensitive.
How to recognise it
After processing, the negative or slide is the final physical source. Further immersion cannot recreate the original latent image.
Why it matters
Push, pull and special-process requests must reach the laboratory before development.
Before sending the film
- Label exposure ISO
- Request push or pull clearly
- Identify the film process
- Report damage or contamination
- Choose a competent lab
Frequently asked questions
Can the process be changed after development?
No. Development is irreversible, so identify the film and communicate special requests first.
Does scanning replace correct development?
No. Scanning interprets the developed image but cannot restore layers damaged or omitted during processing.
Where can I order the correct service?
Use our Film Development Guide to identify C-41, ECN-2, black-and-white, E-6 and Scala services.
Rescanning can reinterpret an existing negative; see Film Scanning Berlin.
