What Happens to Your Negatives After Film Development?

After development and scanning, the physical negatives are dried, cut or left uncut according to the order, and prepared for collection or return.

Digital scans do not replace ownership of the original film. Negatives allow future rescanning, printing and verification.

The practical answer

Berlin Photo Studio is not a permanent archive. Negatives are stored for a limited period and customers remain responsible for collecting them or arranging shipping.

What to consider

  • Cut versus uncut delivery
  • Local collection
  • Return shipping
  • Temporary laboratory storage
  • Archival sleeves and safe handling
  • Future rescanning and printing

Berlin Photo Studio approach

We currently store developed negatives for approximately one month and dispose of uncollected work at the end of the following month. Check the current policy for exact terms.

What to do next

Collect negatives promptly and transfer them into a personal archive with clear dates and labels.

Frequently asked questions

Is this suitable for beginners?

Yes. You do not need technical laboratory knowledge before bringing or mailing a roll. Clear notes about the film and how it was exposed are enough.

Should I keep the negatives?

Yes. The negative is the physical original and allows future rescanning, printing and diagnosis.

Can mistakes be corrected after development?

Scanning can reinterpret information that exists, but development cannot be repeated and missing exposure cannot be created afterwards.
