How to Use ADOX ADOFLO II Without Drying Marks

ADOX ADOFLO II wetting agent 500 ml for film processing

ADOX ADOFLO II is a highly concentrated wetting agent used after the film has been fully fixed and washed. It helps water leave the film surface evenly, reducing drying marks, streaks and spots. Its antistatic effect can also reduce the amount of dust attracted while the film dries.

ADOFLO does not develop, stop or fix the image. It is the final bath.

Chemical safety: read the current bottle label and safety data sheet before mixing. Work with ventilation, chemical-resistant gloves and splash protection. Use dedicated measuring equipment, keep chemistry away from food, children and pets, and never return mixed solution to the concentrate bottle.

Use the correct dilution

ADOX specifies a dilution of 1+200: one part concentrate plus two hundred parts water.

Total final bath ADOFLO II Water
500 ml about 2.5 ml about 497.5 ml
1 litre about 5 ml about 995 ml
2 litres about 10 ml about 1,990 ml

More concentrate is not better. Excess wetting agent can create foam or leave residue on the film. Measure accurately with a small dedicated syringe.

When to use ADOFLO II

Complete development, stop, fixing and the full film wash first. Only then prepare the final ADOFLO bath. A wetting agent cannot repair incomplete fixing or washing, and it does not remove mineral deposits already dried onto a negative.

Prepare the final bath

  1. Use clean water. Distilled or demineralised water can help when local tap water leaves mineral marks.
  2. Measure ADOFLO II at 1+200.
  3. Add it gently to the water without creating foam.
  4. Prepare only the amount needed for the final bath.

ADOX advises using diluted solution within a few days. For the cleanest and most repeatable home workflow, freshly mixed solution is the simplest choice.

Treat the film gently

  1. After washing, place the reel or film into the ADOFLO solution.
  2. Make sure the whole emulsion surface is wetted without vigorous agitation.
  3. Allow excess solution to drain.
  4. Do not wash the wetting agent away with another water rinse.
  5. Hang the film in a clean, low-dust space.

Avoid scraping the emulsion. Film squeegees and fingers can carry grit and create permanent scratches. Good drainage, clean air and patience are safer than force.

Prevent watermarks and dust

  • Clean the drying area before processing.
  • Use correctly diluted wetting agent.
  • Keep the film away from open windows, radiators and moving air.
  • Hang it vertically with a weighted clip at the bottom.
  • Do not cut or sleeve the film until it is fully dry.
  • Store dry negatives in archival sleeves.

Common ADOFLO mistakes

  • Using it before the final wash is complete.
  • Adding extra concentrate because the water is hard.
  • Shaking the solution and producing foam.
  • Rinsing the film with plain water afterward.
  • Dragging a contaminated squeegee over softened emulsion.
  • Keeping diluted working solution for too long.

FAQ

What is the ADOFLO II dilution?

ADOX specifies 1+200. For one litre, use about 5 ml concentrate and 995 ml water.

Should film be rinsed after ADOFLO?

No. It is the final bath; another rinse would remove its effect.

Does more wetting agent prevent more marks?

No. Overconcentration can create foam and residue. Measure the stated dilution.

Can the diluted solution be stored?

ADOX says diluted solution should be used within a few days. Fresh solution is easiest to control.

Does ADOFLO remove existing watermarks?

It is designed to prevent drying marks. Existing deposits may require careful rewashing and should never be scraped from the emulsion.
