Film photography is a chain. Light passes through the lens, the shutter controls time, the film records an invisible image, chemistry makes it permanent and scanning or printing turns it into something you can see. If one link is skipped, the final image may not match your intention.

This guide is a practical reference for the entire chain. Use it before a shoot, while finishing a roll and again when you receive the results. It focuses on the essential decisions, not every possible camera or technique.

Before loading: remove avoidable uncertainty

1. Check the camera

Look at the battery compartment, lens, shutter, film transport and seals. A small amount of dust is normal; fungus, corrosion, a stuck shutter or crumbling light seals need attention. Fire the shutter at several speeds. The difference between a fast and slow setting should be audible or visible.

If the camera has a meter, compare it with a phone meter or another camera in even light. It does not need to match perfectly, but a large difference is a warning. With electronic cameras, use the correct fresh battery.

2. Match film format and process

Confirm whether the camera uses 35mm, 120, 110, APS or another format. Then identify the film process. Most colour-negative film is C-41. Traditional black-and-white film uses black-and-white processing. Cinema film may require ECN-2, while colour slide film normally uses E-6.

A lab cannot safely guess every unlabelled roll. Keep packaging or make a note, especially with hand-loaded film.

3. Choose ISO for the real light

ISO is not a quality ranking. Lower ISO film generally needs more light and can show fine grain. Higher ISO film works in dimmer conditions and often shows more grain. Choose according to the darkest important situation you expect, not only the brightest moment.

While loading: confirm that the film moves

4. Load away from harsh direct light

Direct sun can travel through the cartridge opening and fog the first part of the roll. Use shade or an indoor space. Pull out only enough leader to reach the take-up mechanism.

5. Engage the perforations and take-up spool

On a manual 35mm camera, the sprocket teeth should sit inside the perforations. Advance once with the back open and watch the film move. Close the back only when the leader is secure.

6. Confirm transport

Gently remove slack with the rewind crank if the camera design allows it. As you advance to frame one, watch whether the crank rotates. No movement can mean the film did not catch. Automatic cameras confirm loading differently, often through a display or motor sound.

7. Identify the photograph

What is the frame about? Name it in a few words. “My friend beside the yellow curtain” is clearer than “the room.” This tiny pause guides framing, focus and exposure.

8. Read the light

Notice direction, contrast and colour. Is the face in shadow while the background is in sun? Is the subject backlit? Does the meter see a bright window that is not important? A meter measures reflected light; it does not know your subject.

9. Choose the movement

Shutter speed affects both subject movement and camera shake. Use a fast shutter for walking people, children or moving vehicles. Use a slow shutter deliberately when you want blur, and support the camera when sharpness matters.

10. Choose depth of field

A wider aperture such as f/2 or f/2.8 allows more light and can isolate the subject, but makes accurate focus harder. A smaller aperture such as f/8 or f/11 increases depth of field but needs more light or a slower shutter.

11. Focus on what carries meaning

In portraits, focus is normally placed on the nearest eye. In a layered street scene, it may belong on the relationship between foreground and background. Expose negative film with the shadows in mind

Negative film often tolerates extra exposure better than too little. Severe underexposure leaves the shadow areas thin and without useful information. A scanner can brighten the file, but it cannot invent detail the film never recorded.

This does not mean every scene should be overexposed. It means you should protect the important shadow information, especially in portraits and high-contrast scenes. If your camera meter is influenced by a bright sky or window, move closer, meter the subject or use exposure compensation.

Slide film behaves differently and has less exposure latitude. Accurate metering becomes more critical. Read the film data and lab instructions when using an unfamiliar process.

During the roll: keep the variables understandable

12. Do not change ISO casually

The film inside the camera remains the same. Changing the ISO setting changes the meter’s advice, not the material. If you rate a whole roll differently for push or pull processing, label it clearly and tell the lab.

13. Protect the camera from heat, moisture and impact

Film and cameras dislike hot cars, wet bags and sand. Use a protective pouch, let cold equipment warm gradually before opening it in humid air and avoid leaving film in direct sun.

14. Make short notes

Record unusual exposures, intentional double exposures, push plans and difficult lighting. Notes help both you and the lab interpret the result.

At the end of the roll: stop before forcing

15. Recognise the end

When the advance lever meets firm resistance near the expected frame count, stop. Forcing it can tear the perforations or pull the film from the cartridge. Some rolls provide one or two extra frames; do not treat that as a promise.

16. Rewind correctly

Manual cameras usually require a release button before rewinding. Turn in the indicated direction until the tension falls. Automatic cameras use a motor or rewind control. If the mechanism jams, keep the camera closed and ask for help.

17. Label the exposed roll

Mark the film stock, exposure rating and any processing instruction. Separate exposed and unexposed cartridges. A simple “EXPOSED – C-41 – shot at 400” prevents several expensive misunderstandings.

18. Development is permanent

Development transforms the latent image into a stable negative or positive. The chemistry, time, temperature and agitation affect the result. Choose a lab that communicates its process and can identify special requirements.

19. Decide between develop-only and scanning

20. Communicate special instructions before processing

Tell the lab about push or pull development, known damage, unusual format, remjet cinema film or a roll that may have been exposed twice. Once development begins, some choices cannot be reversed.

21. Inspect the whole roll

Look for patterns. If every frame is thin, exposure or metering is more likely than a single accidental setting. If the same bright streak appears in the same position, suspect a light leak. If frames overlap, inspect film transport. If only one subject is soft, focus or movement is more likely.

22. Inspect the negatives

A scan can hide the physical evidence by adjusting brightness and colour. The negative reveals density, frame spacing, scratches, edge fogging and development marks. Keep your negatives even when the scans look good; they are the original record and can be rescanned or printed later.

Film scans are not untouchable. Cropping, density, colour and contrast adjustments are part of translating the negative. Avoid chasing a generic “film look”—you already photographed on film. Edit to support the subject and preserve useful tonal information.

24. Print or sequence the photographs
